Pizza, pasta and artisan breads on their way to Larkspur

Gary Rulli, Larkspur’s renowned local pastry chef, is getting closer to expanding his pasticceria, Emporio Rulli, Alveole — a fresh pasta kitchen, artisan bread bakery and Roman-style pizzeria.


When Red Robin Catering closed at 489 Magnolia Ave. in January, Rulli seized the opportunity to build his business in downtown Larkspur.

Construction begins soon but for now, you can get a taste of what’s to come at a series of pop-up dinners at Emporia Rulli prepared by two chefs from Rulli’s San Francisco restaurant, Ristobar. As the Marina district restaurant undergoes a retrofit, chefs Marcello Franceschini and Adolfo Veronese will come to Marin for three nightly seatings June 29 and 30,  and every other weekend through August to prepare a four-course, prix-fix menu with two options per course and featuring produce and herbs from Rulli’s Marin home garden; cost is $60 excluding tax, tip and beverages.

“I always felt a great take-out and bread bakery was lacking here,” he says of his hometown for the past 30 years.

Alveole will showcase northern Italian dishes in a casual setting and offer an extensive take-out menu of fresh pasta, sauces, salads and par-baked pizzas made with 72-hour fermented dough.
